When the end is just the beginning – new beginnings with courage

When the fair fashion label EYD had to cease operations at the beginning of 2024, the project "I Will Survive" was on the brink of collapse. But instead of giving up, the Chaiim Foundation, together with the AEB-Stiftung, dared to make a brave new start. How a crisis turned into a new opportunity – and how hope, solidarity, and determination paved the way to a better future.

I Will Survive – A new beginning after hard times?

At the beginning of the year, we received sad news that brought an unexpected turn of events for many: The AEB- Stiftung's long-standing partner, EYD, had to stop producing fair, sustainable fashion. This was not only an economic setback, but also a loss for the women in India who were freed from modern slavery thanks to the project "I Will Survive". Unfortunately, the end of EYD also meant the loss of orders, which were an important source of income for these women. The question arose: could the project continue without support from Germany?

The difficult situation of EYD and the Chaiim Foundation

EYD already found itself in a difficult financial situation during the pandemic. But the real shock came in January when the non-profit GmbH's biggest supporter died unexpectedly. In view of the difficult circumstances, EYD's creators decided to close the fashion label with a heavy heart. Without these supporting forces and in the current situation, it was no longer possible for EYD to maintain the company.

The Indian project partner, the Chaiim Foundation, also had to question its continued existence. The health problems of the founding couple, coupled with the financial challenges, were an enormous burden. But instead of giving up, they made a far-reaching decision: they left the center of Mumbai and moved to a suburb with around 20 women from the project. This step was necessary in order to reduce running costs in the long term and make the project more resilient.

The support of the AEB-Stiftung and the new beginning

The move was not only a logistical challenge, but also entailed considerable costs. However, the AEB-Stiftung continued to support the project. It pledged financial support and ensured that, in the event of failure, the money would go directly to the women. This security was invaluable for Chaiim, as it gave them the support they needed to take this difficult step.

Fortunately, they managed to gain a foothold in their new place of work. The move to the suburb not only enabled them to cut costs, but also to strengthen their relationships with local companies. As a result, orders that had been lost due to the end of EYD were replaced and even compensated for by new orders from the region.

Success despite all adversity

Thanks to the determination and tireless efforts of the Chaiim Foundation and the support of the AEB-Stiftung, "I Will Survive" was able to continue and even become self-sustaining in the long term. The women in the project were able to continue working in a safe and sustainable environment, develop their skills, and shape their lives independently. What began as a difficult challenge has now developed into a success story that shows how important togetherness and support are in difficult times.

The AEB-Stiftung is delighted that this important project can continue. It is an example of how projects that are run with passion and dedication do not give up even in times of uncertainty – and how the courage of those involved can turn a crisis into a new opportunity.

Conclusion: resilience and hope

The story of "I Will Survive" is more than just a story about fashion and work. It is a testimony to the resilience, hope and tireless strength of people who work for the good of others. Even though the road has not always been easy, this story shows that there is always a way to keep going – even when it seems like all is lost. We are proud to be part of this journey and look forward to continuing to support the women of the Chaiim Foundation in the future.
